Viewings: January 2026

Didn't get anywhere close to completing my write-up of my favourite discovery this month; Mervyn LeRoy's pre-Code drama I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang.

Neither did I get to even start on Álex de la Iglesia's superb horror comedy The Day of the Beast, regrettably.

Fortunately, your host still managed to squeeze in two other unearthed gems which got the Dada Debaser™ treatment; teen horror Mirror Mirror, and another LeRoy winner, Little Caesar.

No notes this month.

Alas, I'm on an unplanned hiatus. Might not get to post or respond to any comments for a while. Back soon, hopefully.

🙏 for the Mirror Mirror recommendation.

Was hoping to see Saipan in here.

Fuck Celebrity Mastermind. Bring the regular version back already.

Glad you liked Mirror Mirror. Didn’t expect much from it, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Celebrity Mastermind is just the worst. The GOAT quiz show dumbed down just to accommodate some celebs no one has ever heard of.

Saw your review on Saipan on Letterboxd, I’ll add it to the watch list.

The Brain From Planet Arous and The Manchurian Candidate in the same month! I hope you watched them on the same night!! I love I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang, which I saw several years ago in a film class. The Stepford Wives is one I can rewatch again and again and still be drawn into. The best thing about The Killers is John Cassavetes, but seeing Ronald Reagan as a villain is great fun. I also watched The Curse of the Yellow Snake for the first time and really enjoyed it.

I love Lee Marvin’s ice cold hitman swagger in The Killers, but I definitely agree with you about John Cassavettes being great in it; especially when he lands one on Ronald Reagan.

I love prison flicks, and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang absolutely hit the spot. Equally fascinating is it being based on a true story and leading to reform in chain gangs. I only got half way through reviewing it before having to rush off overseas, but I definitely want to revisit it again and complete my write-up about it when I get back home.

THE KILLERS is a renowned Don Siegel classic that I really need to see.

I haven't seen episodes of THE AVENGERS in ages. What a cool series that was!

Your review of MIRROR MIRROR has prompted me to seek it out. I had never heard of it. Hope I can find the time to watch it in the next week or so.

I linked a YouTube rip of Mirror Mirror. It’s in surprisingly good picture quality, too.
