Picks of 1995

My opinion on Brit Pop might have softened over the years, but if you weren't one of the brainwashed lot into it in 1995, you were pretty much treated like an outcast at the Student Union bar. Anyway, here's Wonderwall my list of films from that year:

12 Monkeys (Terry Gilliam)

The Addiction (Abel Ferrara)

The Blade (Tsui Hark)

Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell (Shinichi Fukazawa)

Casino (Martin Scorsese)

Castle Freak (Stuart Gordon)

Die Hard with a Vengeance (John McTiernan)

Dracula: Dead and Loving It (Mel Brooks)

GoldenEye (Martin Campbell)

The Quick and the Dead (Sam Raimi)

Se7en (David Fincher)

Shallow Grave (Danny Boyle)

Toy Story (John Lasseter)

The Usual Suspects (Bryan Singer)

Village of the Damned (John Carpenter)

Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp from GoldenEye (1995). Just because.

Don't know if this lot still hold up, but I though they were good initially: Citizen X (Chris Gerolmo); Clockers (Spike Lee); La Haine (Mathieu Kassovitz); Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (Ernest R. Dickerson); Kids (Larry Clark); Rumble in the Bronx (Stanley Tong); Species (Roger Donaldson); Screamers (Christian Duguay) and Sudden Death (Peter Hyams). Have not seen them ever since.

The film I'm eager to revisit is Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls. Once regarded as terrible when it was released, but it seems to have undergone a complete 180 as some kind of misunderstood masterpiece. Want to judge for myself, on account of it being a Verhoeven film. I thought it was mediocre when I first watched it, however.

I was gonna say "Where's Heat?" but I see that's 1996 for us.

Other 95 perennial faves: Tyson, Leaving Las Vegas, Dead Man, Hackers, Before Sunrise, Dead Presidents.

Need to revisit: The Addiction, Clockers, Friday.

I remember being underwhelmed with Heat (1995) at the cinema. The hype around De Niro and Pacino sharing the screen together as the ultimate cop and ultimate thief, turned out to be disappointing for me. The shoot out scene was good, though.

Leaving Las Vegas (1995) is one of the most depressing movies I've ever watched.

Caught the Hitchcockian thriller Mute Witness (1995) the other day. Great first act, but falls apart after that. Notable for featuring Faye Ripley attempting an American accent and Alec Guinness's final feature film.

Was that on Talking Pictures?

Another 95 flick I need to revisit one day: The Basketball Diaries.

On Shudder.

Not seen The Basketball Diaries. Only aware of it because of its controversial dream sequence.

As a big fan of director Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR (1985), I really need to get CASTLE FREAK on Blu-ray.

I have always had a should-I-or-shouldn't-I attitude about seeing SHOWGIRLS. Now that it seems to have developed a bit of a cult following (whether due to some now-appreciated merit or to just a so-bad-it's-good vibe), I might have to check it out.

Can't really go wrong with Jeffrey Coombs and Barbara Crampton sharing the screen. Always considered Stuart Gordon as an unsung film maker. Really enjoyed his remake of The Pit and the Pendulum (1991), too.

Went to see Picnic At Hanging Rock at the movie club last night and Show Girls was voted next month's screening since it's getting a 30th anniversary re-release. I've never seen it.

Worth seeing it on the big screen for peak era Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gerson, to be honest. The 4K UHD release of Showgirls is selling for ridiculous money on eBay.

Speaking of 1995 blind spots, William Friedkin's Jade is a film I haven't seen.
